Brian & Marguerite Nicholson
As for many who have the inherent need to coax something magical from the soil, Nicholson Vineyards is the realization of a dream for Brian and Marguerite. Rich in family tradition, with Brian being a 9th generation Californian (his ancestors built the Monterey Presidio), the vineyards and winery represent a passion to produce wonderful fruit and create elegant wines.
The Vineyards & Olive Grove
Our estate vineyards include four-plus acres which are separated into three blocks of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vines were planted in 1996 and expanded in 2004 (additional Pinot Noir). Each block includes a diverse combination of rootstocks and clones, and is situated with a southwest exposure, allowing for maximum sunlight and cool evening breezes.
More recently, the four acre Olive Grove was added in 2005. Five Tuscan varietals grow in the classical grove style. In 2008, the maiden harvest was celebrated and our first extra virgin oil, Piccolo Pisano was produced. The grapes and olives grow harmoniously together, as they have done in Southern Europe for centuries.
Winemaker, Ian Brand
Ian joined our team in January 2008. He brings to us a great deal of experience in the Santa Cruz Mountains, in both wine making and vineyard/fruit management. He earned his B.S. in Environmental Science before joining the Peace Corps. He worked with indigenous farmers and craftsmen in the Andian Plateau of Ecuador. Before joining us, Ian was the assistant winemaker and vineyard manager for a large Santa Cruz Mountains winery. He is passionate about wine and patiently dedicated to his labors. He has the ability to transform stellar qualities from our fruit into exceptional wine, while educating our minds and palates in the finer details of wine making.
